My wife manages to have the three of us sit down together for family dinner virtually every night. This is something both of us shared from our childhoods and value today.
Occasionally, when my wife it out of town on business or working late, my daughter and I are left to fend for ourselves. We take the opportunity to make a big deal out of it – celebrating Daddy – Daughter Dinner Dates together. Her two favorite places are a bakery-cafe and a neighborhood Chinese restaurant. At the first place, she always gets a chocolate chip cookie for dessert. At the second, the highlight for her – other than, of course, being out with her Daddy, is the Calamari.
When we go out together, she behaves like a young adult. We talk about the day – what was learned at school, what were the best parts, what was the most unusual thing to happen. Although she’s a shade under four feet tall, she sits up so tall in her chair or booth. It is such a joy for me to see how far she’s come in five years and how much the future holds for her. A very proud Daddy indeed.
